Thanksgiving/Healthy Eating

Sorry it's been awhile since I have updated this website- between being sick for awhile and being busy I just couldn't get around to it. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with their families.

Around Thanksgiving our class talked about what it meant to be thankful and we discussed what we are thankful for. We agreed that we are thankful for our families, friends, school, food, sleep, and toys. We made a class book about what our class was thankful for (each child contributed their own page to the book). We also practiced our patterning skills by decorating turkeys with colored feathers to make a pattern.

This past week we talked about what we could do to keep our bodies healthy. We primarily focused on eating healthy, but we also talked about hand-washing and brushing our teeth as well. Scrubby Bear came to visit to talk to us about washing our hands the right way (using soap and water, scrubbing the tops, bottoms, and in between) before eating and after using the bathroom.

We talked about the different food groups and looked at the food pyramid. We read Show-down at the Food Pyramid about the different food groups and how we have to limit junkfood (sweets and oils) so we don't get sick. We discussed how eating a little bit of sweets and junkfood is okay as long as we only eat a little and we brush our teeth.

Here are some pictures from this week (sorry there aren't many, next week there should be a lot more since we will be doing Gingerbread activities).

5 Senses

This week we finished learning about the 5 senses by talking about hearing and seeing. Our Speech teacher Miss Robinson taught the kids some sign language that can be used in our class daily. She taugh them the signs for "hello,""sit," "stand," "please," and "sorry."

We also talked a lot about colors and what happens when we mix some colors together. We read the book Mouse Paint by Ellen Stohl Walsh and we then mixed our own colors together to make new ones.

And finally, even though it is not our letter of the week, letter E seems to be very popular in our class. These two friends have names that begin with E and one even made the letter out of cubes.

This coming week we will be reviewing the letters and letter sounds we have learned so far (A, F, L, P, S, T), as well as talk about what it means to be thankful. We will be in school Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week. Blankets will go home on Wednesday to be washed.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Sand-Art, Pre-K Doctors

Here are some pictures to go along with our study of the 5 senses. We did some sand art for letter S and to feel the texture- the kids did an awesome job with this! I set up the dramatic play area like a doctors office- the kids are pretending to give each other and the dolls check-ups, especially checking to see if their 5 senses body parts are working right :)

I hope everyone is enjoying their 3 day weekend. See you tomorrow!

No School Monday Nov.12, half day of school Friday Nov. 16

Just a reminder- there is no school tomorrow (Monday November 12th) for Veterans Day. On Tuesday I will send out reminders of conference times coming up this Friday. If you cannot make your time please let me know so we can reschedule. I would like to meet with everyone to go over the report card and expectations for this year.

We are currently learning about the 5 senses- last week we did smell, touch, and taste. We smelled different items in jars and had to guess what they were. We felt different items and describe them- we also used a box to play a guessing game using our sense of touch. On Friday we had a taste test and a vote to decide which taste we liked the best- sweet, sour, or salty. This coming week we are discussing hearing and sight and will be doing lots of review of colors and mixing colors together. We will also be doing letter Tt.

Our Pre-K Class Election

Today we  read Duck for President and we talked about what it means to vote and who a president is. We learned that when we vote we pick one thing/person we like the best. A teacher is in charge of a classroom, a principal is in charge of a school, and the President is in charge of everyone!

We had our own election today in our classroom. Our candidates were Duck, who wanted more recess, Pig, who wanted more center time, and Cow, who wanted to take away snack time. Some students commented that they wouldn't vote for Cow because taking away snack time wasn't fair. Each child picked the candidate they liked the best, colored a picture of them, and then voted on a ballot using a BINGO marker. Then we counted the votes and graphed the results as a class.

Duck is the winner! More recess for everyone!

Surprisingly Pig and Cow were tied....despite Cow not wanting snack time. Maybe our friends would rather have a longer nap time/quiet play time than take the time to eat? Voting results can definitely be interesting!
